Film Freak Central's Storefront

We'll make this official at the site later today, but THE FILM FREAK CENTRAL 2007 ANNUAL is now available for purchase. We've set up a special Lulu storefront for all our books; this is currently the only way to get the newest one, but it will be available for retail sale soon enough.

Final tally, by the way: 216 films reviewed, 30 of which we're formally critiquing for the first time.

Click the image below to check it out. Thank you in advance for your patronage.

Because this is "Batman" dammit...the most serious, brooding character in all of Western literature. Please offer the proper respect as overpaid character actors stumble around Bo Welchland Tm.

Tip--You know this is the serious "Batman" because the Joker's lipstick is all smeary like.

Shazam.

"You crossed the line first, sir. You hammered them. And in their desperation they turned to a man they didn't fully understand. Some men aren't looking for anything logical. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn."-Alfred

I bet the people churning out retarded political tract like Rendition and Lions for Lambs would kill to write like this. That trailer should get any movie geek hard enough to cut glass.

So, Bill & co. ... year-end best/worst?

I've been catching up with Mad Men via iTunes, largely at Seattle Jeff's recommendation elsewhere in these talkbacks, and I've gotta say: outstanding television. Those twelve hours are better cinema than I've seen in any six movies in the last year.

Bill,

In your review of the Simpsons Blu-Ray disc, you mention only being able to access the "core" of the soundtrack. As someone whose thinking about jumping into the blu-ray pool, what exactly does this mean?

Well, Fox has been 'future-proofing' their BDs by encoding them with DTS Master Lossless Audio, which is basically the studio master, uncompressed, clocking in at a bit rate of about 16mbps. Unfortunately, the hardware to decode DTS Master Lossless Audio has yet to reach the market, and so current BD players and receivers downconvert it to 1.5mbps via optical or coaxial. Considering DTS on regular DVDs is generally encoded/decoded @ 640kbps, it's still an appreciable upgrade, and as far as I know the integrity of the mix itself isn't being compromised in the downconversion.

The technology to decode the other uncompressed/lossless formats (Dolby TrueHD, PCM) exists and is commonplace, by the by, but my receiver is such a dinosaur I can only listen in DD or DTS 5.1.
